Singam is a sequel to Suriya's Yamudu, which was a good hit in Telugu as well as Tamil. This is an attempt to use that character in a different premise to enthrall the masses. Did Suriya succeed in pulling it off yet again?
What is it about?
Narasimham (Suriya) is a DCP now and works undercover to know the facts about drug smugglers in Kakinada town. He takes the charge as DCP when things go out of control and from then on it is about how Narasimham teaches a lesson to all the evil doers.
Performances :
As it is a sequel, Suriya has to made sure to bring that emotions from the original. He has excelled again in the role of Narasimham. He is charming in the scenes where he shares light moments with Anushka and Hansika and he is extremely powerful in the confrontation scenes with the villains. Anushka's role is limited to couple of songs. Hansika has more footage compared to Anushka and she is cute in a teenager role. Santhanam's comedy is cliched but worked it parts. Rahman and Mukesh Rushi failed to make an impact. There is nothing much to say about rest of the star cast.
Technicalities :
Devi Sri Prasad's soundtrack is mediocre. All the songs worked as cigarette breaks. Background score is not impressive too. One of the rare failures for DSP. He is out of sorts in this film. Not so inspiring scenes and situations should be the reason for it. Cinematography is alright. There is nothing to rave about the technical departments. The length of the film is a pain. Editing is not up to the mark. Director Hari is known for making masala potboilers and this is a brand Hari film. There are few scenes which pleases masses. Hero taking on villains is good. But most of the film drags aimlessly.
Analysis :
Singam starts on a dull note. Despite being a sequel to a powerful and energetic film, this one drags far too long and tests the patience of audience. Pace picks up only after the hero takes charge as DSP. Suriya took over the film from that point and it races towards interval with few impressive scenes. However, the first hour or so is a sheer pain to watch as the story doesn't go anywhere.
Second half is mainly focused on how the hero teaches a lesson to all the baddies. Although it starts on an exciting note, the film loses steam within no time and it drags towards a predictable climax. There is no relief in this action based mass movie as the director tried too much to please the frontbenchers. Except for hero elevation scenes and few dialogues, there is nothing much to take home.
Aggressive promotion and the brand of Yamudu should work in its favor at the box office. Content wise it is very below average and appeals to hardcore masses. This film cannot stand on any level when compared to its predecessor. If you are expecting another roller coaster ride like Yamudu you will be disappointed. Singam shines in patches and disappoints on a whole.
Verdict : Singam roars? Not much. Bores? Pretty much!
