Yes you heard it right. The cost of 1 kg onions is only Rs 100. Surpassing the prices of 1 litre petrol and even the cost of a beer, the onion prices have touched Rs 100-a-kg mark in several places across the country on Tuesday. The previous record high of Rs 85 per kg was in 2010. What's irony while onion prices soared to all-time high is that Central government is putting responsibility and onus on the state governments and washing its hands. Blaming traders for creating artificial scarcity, the government said it will restrict onion exports till prices stabilise. An immediate ban was, however, ruled out. After discussing the issue with Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Food Minister K V Thomas said there is no plan to ban onion exports. This is certainly the sad state of affairs of our nation at a time when people are suffering from huge price hike of commodities, government, which should act first, is being part of the political 'blame game' by passing the buck to states and even blaming the unseasonable rains.
