Legendary director Mani Ratnam had few setbacks in recent times with films like Kadal and Raavan bombing at the box office. He is back with a romantic drama OK Bangaram, set in contemporary times. Dulquer and Nitya played the lead roles in this film.
What is it about?
Adi (Dulquer) and Tara (Nitya) fall in love with each other, but they don't have a great opinion about marriage. They decide to start live-in relation but makes a deal about not marrying at all. However things don't turn out as they expected and put them to test. Will they marry or not forms rest of the story.
Perfomances:
Dulquer Salmaan is a natural actor who has the looks of a boy next door. He is a very good performer and carries of his role with ease. He is an experienced actor in Malayalam cinema and will surely earn some fans in Telugu and Tamil with this film. We all know about the talent of Nitya Menen. She is a class apart. This is another feather in her cap. Prakash Raj is very impressive in this film. Leela Samson played a key role and she is very good. Rest of the cast chipped in whenever needed.
Technicalities:
Mani Ratnam, a creative genius who always switches between different genres is at home in dealing with this romantic tale. He has proved his mettle yet again when critics have written him off. He still has it in him and there are many moments that have his signature all over.
AR Rahman's music is the biggest plus point. All songs are beautifully picturized. PC Sriram's cinematography is superb. Editing is crisp. Technically the film is well made and kudos to Dil Raju for buying the rights of this film by believing in an out of form director.
Thumbs Up:
Nitya Menen
Direction
Music
Thumbs Down:
Slow Pace
Limited Appeal
Analysis:
Mani Ratnam fans will not be disappointed with OK Bangaram. It is vintage Mani dealing with the romantic feelings of a contemporary couple. The story is too simple and is just about the journey of a young male and female who have aspirations and great ambitions in life. Mani Ratnam keeps it very simple by not going overboard in dealing with any of the emotions.
People who love to watch romantic films will be glued to the screens. Thanks to the wonderful chemistry between the lead pair. They are a treat to watch. They made the job of the director pretty easy with rocking chemistry. Songs are integral part of this film and keeps the movie flowing without any hiccups in spite of slow pace.
First half is breezy and second half has some emotions that are shown brilliantly without too much of melodrama. Climax is arresting as well as simple at the same time. Not many directors are dealing with love stories of late and here is one rare gem from the man who has made everlasting classics in this genre. Go watch it.
Verdict: Mani Ratnam in Top Form
