The Coastal Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh is on a high alert for the very severe cyclonic storm Lehar, which is expected to cross the coast around November 28 noon between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam.
The storm would strike with gale wind speed reaching 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph along and off coastal districts of Krishna, West and East Godavari and Vishakhapatnam districts and 120-130 kmph gusting to 140 kmph over Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and Guntur districts at the time of landfall.
Andhra Pradesh government has decided to deploy 30 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for rescue and relief operations in the coastal districts. While 15 NDRF teams have already been positioned in Visakhapatnam (4), East Godavari (5), West Godavari (2) and Krishna (4) districts, the state government on Tuesday requested the Centre to rush in another 15 teams as moderate to very heavy rainfall is expected from Wednesday.
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy discussed the situation with Chief Secretary P.K. Mohanty and wanted the administration to remain on high alert and take all steps to prevent loss of life due to cyclone.
